Silos can create tunnel vision, limiting our ability to see the bigger picture. This became clear to me during my time as a peer educator at the height of the HIV/AIDS pandemic in Tanzania. I was overloaded with information from various organizations—each one offering different curriculums, all trying to solve the same problem. Despite the good intentions, the lack of collaboration made everything more complicated than it needed to be.

During those years, I often found myself in regions like Iringa, raising awareness about responsible behavior and HIV prevention among youth. It didn’t take long for me to notice that we were constantly receiving new training on similar topics—different words, but the same ideas. Why couldn’t organizations just work together, harmonize their approaches, and focus on proven solutions? The answer was clear: everyone wanted credit. Attribution means more funding, bigger projects, and better salaries. But in this drive for recognition, we sometimes forget the people we are meant to serve.

As I reflect on my journey, I realize the importance of partnerships. At Shule Direct, we embrace collaboration because we know we can achieve more together. Through partnerships with organizations like Policy Forum, TEN/MET, and RELI, we’ve been able to scale our educational technologies, reaching more learners across Tanzania. Partnerships allow us to leverage each other’s strengths, allocate resources more effectively, and, most importantly, create real impact.

Next week, during CSO Week, we have another chance to deepen these partnerships. The theme, “Progress through Partnership: Collaboration as a Driver for Development in Tanzania,” couldn’t be more timely. Whether we look at it through SDG 17 or the African proverb, “If you want to go far, go together,” the message is the same: partnerships work.
