When Sandra completed her primary school studies at Victoria Primary School and joined Form One, she never imagined that computer science would become part of her learning journey. To her, technology was something she used, not something she thought she could understand, create, or one day contribute to.
Like many young learners, Sandra enjoyed playing games. But behind that enjoyment was a question that kept coming back to her mind: How are these games made? Who creates them? How does a phone or computer know what to do?
For a long time, those questions remained unanswered. Coding felt like something far away, something meant for experts, older students, or people with special access to computers. Sandra did not know where to begin, and she had never imagined that she would get the opportunity to learn computer science in Form One.
Through the Shule Direct Coding Club, that began to change.
The club created a space where Sandra could ask questions freely, learn step by step, and discover that coding is not as distant as she once thought. Through practical sessions, she was introduced to the basics of computer science and coding, including how websites and digital platforms are built using tools such as HTML and CSS.
For Sandra, learning HTML and CSS opened a new way of seeing the digital world. She began to understand that the games, websites, and applications she uses are created through instructions written by people. What once looked like magic started to make sense.
“Nilikuwa napenda kucheza games, lakini sikuwahi kujua zinatengenezwaje. Kupitia Coding Club, nimeanza kuelewa kuwa hata mimi naweza kujifunza kutengeneza vitu vya kidigitali,” Sandra shares.
Her journey is still at the beginning, but the change is already visible. Sandra is no longer only a user of technology; she is becoming a learner who understands how technology works. The curiosity that once lived only in her mind is now being shaped into knowledge, confidence, and possibility.
Through Shule Direct’s Skills Development Mission, the Coding Club is helping learners like Sandra build more than technical skills. It is helping them develop problem-solving abilities, creativity, confidence, and the courage to imagine themselves in spaces they had never considered before.
Sandra’s story reminds us that when learners are given access, guidance, and encouragement, they begin to see technology differently. They stop asking only, “How was this made?” and begin to ask, “What can I create?”
For Sandra, coding is no longer just a subject. It is a doorway into curiosity, creativity, and a future where she can be part of building the digital solutions she once only admired.
